The Black Cab sessions are a rather marvellous idea intended to draw attention to the approaching extinction of London's iconic Black Cabs. Recently, Stephen Fretwell happily added his support to the campaign in time-honoured tradition - by sitting in the back of a cab and playing live as he was driven round the streets of London. Stephen Fretwell's 'Man on The Roof' is released this week. Fretwell's second album, 'Man On The Roof' was born in New York and Manchester and features contributions from Smashing Pumpkins' James Iha, Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger and Eli Janney of Girls Against Boys. A significant step forward from Stephen's 'Magpie' debut, the album varies in mood from the plaintive 'Darlin' Don't' to the more lighthearted live favourite 'William Shatner's Dog', but running all through the album is the theme of, as Stephen says, "Meeting a girl and getting cheered up by her." Following a cancellation earlier in the week (necessitated by aeroplane issues at Manchester Airport) Stephen Fretwell will be playing live on 6music tomorrow morning (Thursday, September 6).
